Authority Layer

U.S.-Canadian Bibliographic, Copyright, Trademark, Patent & ISBN Authority Framework

Overview

The Authority Layer integrates Lock & Key with external governing authorities for bibliographic identification, copyright registration, trademark/patent protection, and ISBN assignment across U.S., Canadian, and international jurisdictions. Each publishing transaction connects to applicable government and industry records.

This framework ensures every publication maintains complete authority documentation while distinguishing between ownership (copyright), identification (ISBN/CIP), and use rights (publishing contract).

External Authority Framework

CANADA

Library and Archives Canada / Canadian Cataloguing-in-Publication (CIP)

Used as the Canadian bibliographic/cataloguing reference point for eligible publications. Lock & Key maintains CIP status, cataloguing information, and bibliographic records for all Canadian-originated or Canadian-eligible publications.

Records Maintained: CIP status, cataloguing information, title, author, contributors, publisher, imprint, edition, language, format, subjects, classification, ISBN, publication date, and related editions

UNITED STATES

U.S. Copyright Office

Responsible for U.S. copyright registration and recordation functions. Lock & Key maintains a dedicated Copyright Authority Record for each U.S. transaction.

Key Distinction: Copyright ownership differs from contractual publishing rights. A publishing contract may grant TGHP particular rights without transferring complete copyright ownership.

Records Include: Copyright claimant, author, title, work type, publication status, registration application, registration number, registration date, recordation information, transfer documents, licenses, assignments, deposit information, related works, and related contracts

Library of Congress

Maintains institutional repository for U.S. Copyright Office and serves as the principal bibliographic/deposit authority.

Mandatory Deposit: Certain U.S. published works are subject to mandatory deposit (distinct from copyright registration). Lock & Key records deposit status, deposit date, and compliance status for tracking publication obligations.

United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

Maintains trademark and patent matters associated with publishing brands, imprints, product identifiers, inventions, and technologies.

Trademarks: Company marks, imprint marks, publishing brands, product brands, series names, logos, slogans, merchandise brands, digital brands

Patents: Publishing technology, software-related inventions, manufacturing/printing technology, technological processes, patentable inventions associated with company operations

U.S. ISBN Agency / Bowker

Maintains ISBN identification and administration authority. Library of Congress specifically states it does not administer or distribute ISBNs—directing publishers to Bowker.

Important Note: ISBN is a publication identifier, NOT evidence of copyright ownership. Lock & Key maintains separate ISBN Master Records with metadata, agency information, registrant/publisher, imprint, title, edition, format, language, publication date, status, related ISBNs, territory, and metadata status.

Every applicable publishing product has an Authority Record inside Lock & Key (Format: AUTH-YYYY-XXXXXX).
